Sound it out challenge
Music can help bridge the gap between parents/caregivers and kids, making for earnest and constructive conversation about emotional wellbeing.
We’re inviting middle schoolers in the U.S to write their best rap, song, or poem that relates to mental health for a chance to win an iPad Pro, 1-year Calm App subscription, and a personalized journal.
Submissions are due by January 31, 2022 at 11:59pm EST
4 participants will be awarded
One participant will be awarded an iPad Pro, 1-year Calm App subscription, and a personalized journal within each of the following categories:
- Best Rap
- Best Song
- Best Poem/Spoken Word
- Viewer’s Choice Award*
*Participants must post their submission to Instagram and tag @sounditouttogether and use the hashtag #SoundItOut for a chance to win the Viewer’s Choice Award, which as discussed in the Official Rules, will be awarded based on overall Instagram engagement. Users must be 13+ to hold an Instagram account.
How the Challenge Works
Participants must submit a song, rap, or poem/spoken word that relates to mental health, how they process their own feelings, the importance of talking about mental health with peers, and how they want to be supported by their parents and community.
Participants must email their submission to the following email address (firstname.lastname@example.org) to gain a chance of winning in one of the following categories (best rap, song, and poetry/spoken word). For a chance to win the Viewer’s Choice Award, participants must still email their submission, but they must also post to their Instagram account (account must be public), tagging @sounditouttogether and use the hashtag #SoundItOut.
Requirements for all entries:

Join our National Virtual Event
On Thursday, February 10th we are hosting a Sound It Out National Virtual Event. Speakers will discuss the importance of mental health especially for middle schoolers, kids will share how they process challenging times and emotions, and hear from a special selection of winners of the Sound It Out Challenge.
